Summary Description and Reason for Designation
The 17th century vessel, carrying a cargo of precious Carerra marble from north Italy, was trying to run ashore when she hit the notorious Sarn Padrig Reef. She was heavily armed with at least 18 main battery, and 18 smaller cast-iron and wrought-iron guns. Excavations have revealed a bronze bell dated 1677 along with pewter vessels and other artefacts. Italian marble was imported in great quantities to England at that time for the construction of important buildings, such as St Paul’s Cathedral.
