Summary Description and Reason for Designation
This wooden vessel, used to transport slate from the important quarries in Snowdonia to markets further afield, belongs to the pre-industrial era of slate working. The oak keel and planking survives on the sea bed protected by the cargo mound and partial excavation suggests that there may be over 40,000 slates lying in layers on a packing of twigs. Three hand-cut shapes are represented, and their workmanship and tooling suggest that they may be 14th- 15th century in date.
