Summary Description and Reason for Designation
The dream of building a submersible vessel for naval warfare has exercised designers for centuries before Rev William Garrett designed Resurgam, one of the first engine-powered submarines. Built by J T Cochrane at Birkenhead, her cylindrical steel hull with cone-shaped bow and stern was clad in timber and a large boiler and Lamm-type engine filled nearly all the midships section. It gave a dive duration of 10-12 miles at 2-3 knots and carried a three-man crew. On its way to Admiralty trials in Portsmouth, it sank off Rhyl in 1880.
