Summary Description and Reason for Designation
The Viking sea-route between Dublin and Denmark was made hazardous by the Smalls, a rock 15 miles from the Pembrokeshire coast. A Viking chieftain lost his sword, and probably his ship as well here in the 11th century and in 1991 his bronze sword guard, decorated with silver and niello stylized animal patterns, was discovered and given to the NMG of Wales. Whether further artefacts or vessel parts survive is unknown as more modern wrecks obscure the rocky gully.
